We can't always finish what we started, but sometimes you actually get a second chance. Let me take you back to 2011...
Olanga Island. If you've been following our blogs last year, this name might ring a bell. Before going there, we heard it's a beautiful island in the Visayas Region of the Philippines, but the community is very poor, with many families earning only $1.00 (R7.00) a day. The whole island is made up out of coral rock. They told us about the school inside the church and how the kids needed a safe playground.
Southbound 2011 started this project "Pave the way for the children to play" http://www.gcex.org/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=pave-the-way-for-the-children-to-play.html&Itemid=580.
Distant Islands 2012 are going to finish it!
In 2011 we got up every morning at 05:00 to start working, digging holes in the hard coral rocks for the fence's foundations to be laid, learning what physical endurance means. At the end of the week, our blistered hands had dug 22 holes, ready for future teams to finish the fence and playground.
That's what we, as Distant Islands, are going to do from 25 September to 5 October 2012. But before these 16 willing hands can start the work, we need to raise $1 500 for construction materials - cement, steel, bars, hollow blocks, gravel and sands.
