Looking back I am greatful for the chance to be part of what God is doing in Zanzibar.
As final serving act we painted the church in Stone Town, together with the congregation. They were so eager to paint that we left the idea of painting it neatly. We did our best to finish is well, but it was also good that the congregation participated. That is worth much more than a perfectly painted building. They were very excited about their "Christmas present".
As previously noted, our budget was tight so the team pitched in to buy the paint for the church. As I went to town to draw the last bit of money for the team I prayed that the Lord would provide more money. As I checked the balance, there were almost R2000 more in the account than what should have been there. I was speechless. So we had enough money to refund some team members and bless the churches.
As for my expectation to see the small group we started in June, I did meet one guy that became a Christian on our outreach in June. He was still faithful, yet alone. Of the other guys he knew nothing, except that most moved away to look for a job somewhere else. I linked him up with the local church. I also met the guy who stole all our stuff in June, and that was way more difficult than I anticipated. He did not say he was sorry, but he also could not look me in the eye. After a battle with myself I did manage to say we forgive him for stealing our stuff. When asked he said he still follows Jesus, whether that is true only God knows. I pray that God will still work with him.
As the rest of the team was continuing with the outreach I returned to Dar Es Salaam to fly to SA for my best friends wedding - only to learn that Air Tanzania was grounded and that there was no fight available (and payable) before two days after the wedding and one day after my flight to my parents. Reluctently I had to face the fact that I was not attending that wedding and trust that God had a plan. He always does, though no clear divine appointed happened I believe there was a reason. At least I knew a taxi driven that helped me around Dar Es Salaam, and I a good place to sleep. I did learn to things: as far as possible, own the credit card which buys to flight ticket and never have a withdrawel limit on your bank account less that the cost of a new flight ticket.
We all learned many things about trusting God and serving even outside our comfort zone.
For me and Zanzibar this however will be: to be continued...
