Flaming heights

Roasting marshmallows by candle light is not adventurous enough, we needed a new challenge and some adventure...roasting, or rather burning, marshmallowes on a volcano...

We packed our bags and headed for a trip to the beautiful town of Antigua. On the way there we stopped at the volcano, expecting a 3km hike up the mountain and then the ultimate experience - roasting marshmallows over burning coals or lava. We were as prepared as we thought we can ever be! We wore long pants for protection from the heat, took water, made peace with the fact that our shoes are going to melt and of course remembered the marshmallows!

Unexpected factor #1: As we reached the top of the mountain after the 3km hike , we were so excited and worn out, but yeah! We're on the top! We're going to see lava! But what we saw wasn't lava, it was the foot of the volcano. There, lying before us and stretching high into the sky, was the volcano and it was at least another hour hike to reach the top.

Unexpected factor #2: Real hot rocks on the way up. I never expected to put my hand on burning hot rocks, and we are only halfway up the volcano! At that moment I thought: "If it's already this hot, how are we going to get to the top without burning?"

Unexpected factor #3: Where's the lava????? There wasn't as much lava as we were hoping to see, but at least we got to see a little bit of red! That was awesome!

Unexpected factor #4: Marsmallows roasted over candlelight and marshmallows roasted over burning coals or lava taste exactly the same!

It was an awesome journey and an experience I'll never forget, and hopefully I'll be able to hike all the way up again some day, now that I know what to expect, and see some more lava!

Lava love,

Elzet
