During our time in Jordan, I was asking God lots of questions.

“God, do you see the people dying? Do you see their scars? Why aren’t you stopping this? What is my point here if I can’t stop this?”

The worst part is not the suffering. The worst part is the suffering without knowing God. That people are experiencing loss without knowing God. Its not just here. All over the world, people are living without knowing God. People are dying without knowing God, people are “happy” without knowing God. People are living the high life, without knowing God. People need to know that Jesus died on the cross for them.

As for culture... I could eat Pita and Hummus EVERY DAY. I could gobble down buckets full of Jordanian pastries. I can now also sleep through the Islamic prayer calls that echo over the city at 4 in the morning.

So in Jordan :

I loved pita bread with hummus. I loved greeting with kisses. I loved hugging Syrian little ones. I loved the colour of the sky during a sandstorm. I loved the smell of rain on dusty roads. I loved Arabic gospel songs. I loved how sparingly I used the Hug in a Mug cuppachinos that my mom sent along with me. I loved helping refugees to use a camera for the first time. I loved seeing refugees come alive in the freedom of being creative, because they live in a world where imagination is not allowed. I loved sleeping under a warm duvet every night. I loved team life. I loved the look on people’s faces when they hear that Jesus loves them unconditionally, no matter what.
