Mexico to Guatemala

Cancun airport

We arrived in Cancun and got through immigration with no problems, we even went as far as to ask them about the required flight tickets out that we were forced to buy from Cubana air and were told that it is not true. We gathered our bags and went into the departures part of the airport to see if we can get someone from Cubana air to talk to, but the Cubana air ticket counter was closed. We settled in and went in search of a few things, info was helpful and told us that the Cubana air people will be back the next morning at 10am. We also found a very nice place to sleep in the airport and moved our things there. There were still 5 of the 11 of us in various stages of sick with runny tummies and thus were not looking to good, but mine was a lot better at that stage. MX AirThat evening we chilled and went to sleep only to be joined by 7 or 8 other backpackers that night waiting for early flights out of the airport, at the end our corner became like the sleep in airport for free hotel. The next morning we were waiting at Cubana air when they arrived and explained our situation, the man said that we will need to go into the head office in town to get helped, but to take transport there was really expensive. Then a Juan started to help us translate and offered to help us since he does a lot of work for Cubana air and knows the people. He told us that the head of the office comes in at 2 pm and that we would be able to speak to her and see what happens since we wanted a 100% refund and not the one with the penalty that was only about 65%. so we waited a bit more and when the lady was suppose to be there she was not, but a manager of the head office did come. We explained to him and he talked to the man at the counter and got him to fill in all the forms and take all our details and send it to the main office that we would just be able to come get the refund the next day and see if we could get a 100% refund. So that meant one more night in the airport, I got to take a shower in the disabled stall since it had it own washbasin and drain in the floor. At the same time our travel team was looking at the cheapest transport to Guatemala and the same Juan that helped us talk to Cubana air also started speaking to some people to see if he could get us cheaper transport to Belize city from where we could take a cheap bus, he ended giving us a deal with a charted 14 seater bus that could take us and our bags for less than it would cost to take a bus there with the benefit of it taking us to the Cubana air office first to get our refund. That evening it was another night in the airport, but with no other people joining us. The next morning the Juan phoned the head office to find out of our refund was there and it was so we loaded our bags and of we went. At the head office we found out that we are not getting the 100% refund and only the 65%, it was a bit sad and made me a bit mad.

Trip

MX bussAnd off we went, we went through the Mexico border post and had to pay a surprise exit fee from Mexico, but when we got to the Belize side the bus driver stopped and started offloading our bags only then did we find out that he could not cross the border and that there were a big misunderstanding even thought we asked 3 times if we are going to Belize city. So we made him take us back to the closest town on Mexico side where there were the busses that goes to Belize and Guatemala. We first had to stop again at the Mexico border and speak to the officers there to explain our situation and that we would be going past the next day, they were very helpful. So that evening we found the bus to Guatemala and since it only left the next morning another night sleeping in a station to all the onlookers amusement. The next day we took a bus to just inside Guatemala, there was someone who helped us there to get a bus to Guatemala city and then a small bus to a town closer to Panajachel where we were going, they also allowed us to stop over and shower at their office for the 6 hours before the next bus left, it helped a lot. That evening we got on a bus to Guatemala city and we arrived very early the morning, while speaking to our driver we found out that for a bit more he can take us all the way to Panajachel. So in the end after 5 days of travelling, 4 nights on the road and some serious travel challenges we arrived in Panajachel. MX stay

Personal

It was an interesting time for me, except for the stomach still going the whole time since we left Cuba and it being one of the weirdest stomach flu/something that I ever had due to its nature a lot of other things was going on that I did not understand. The whole time since we left Cuba it felt like something was waiting to explode / like were standing on a cliff waiting to jump.MX G The whole time I had conflicting emotions about my decisions and what I was hearing from God and just what was going on and I felt the whole time like we were missing something. At the same time I was still on this peace filled relaxing in God journey and really feeling relaxed as if some of what was happening could not effect me. It was weird, but all things was revealed in due time.
