Have you ever felt your tummy making spirals and flip flopping while you wait for your supper bill? It's not really the best of feelings, is it? This is exactly how we felt after sharing one of the best meals we've had with two locals. Wesley, Tjaart and Margot - the more active three in the team, met our friends while playing soccer with the scholars at the local school. On our last evening in the town of which name we're still not sure we invited the boy and his brother to have noodles with us. They suggested
local lamb.
Being South African, fed up with noodles and having Reynard and his love for the good things in life with us we willingly agreed and allowed them to lead us to the best restuarant in town. At this point it is vital to mention that we had noodles in another local hang out and paid what amounted to R6.50 per person for a meal no one could finish. (Zylna and Jana came close...) Our budget for this last supper was then R6 per person.
Arriving at the restaurant we were led into a small room with only 2 tables. Three waitresses came and stood around us watching every move while our friend and now handy translater tried to place an order. With a shock
we realised that 1kg of lamb is R120, again being South African and meat lovers we dicided to give it a try and forget about the budget just this once. Wrong move! As you know meat goes with rice. Especially lamb, so we ordered a bowl of rice each. Our hosts, still eagerly standing around is with great intrest in our every move insisted we try some other side dishes. Wanting to avoid yet another frustrating translating process we told our friend to order any three. He translated this into "bring everything you have!" and this they did!
While we were sipping our intresting green tea with flowers, suger cubes and strange looking seeds they multitude of waiter appointed to our table started carrying in food. First came the lamb. Which I have to add was devine! This was followed with the rice, then came a strange dish we've still not got figured out, cucumber in a hot and cold variant, celery, corn, patatos, tofu each presented in a different and delicious way! With each new
dish being carried into the room our giggles multiplied while our friends urged us on to "EAT!" of "Take picture!"
What a mission it was to eat some of these foods with the chop stick! And what a giggle we were to our hosts. So much so that the owner even came and fed Tjaart! After every three sips of the tea we took the shy little waitress came and refilled our cups! How kind... or so we thought untill we realised that we're paying R10 per cup! At a point I think they realised our giggles turned into groans. our trummies were filled to the max and even though we wanted to, no one could take another bite! They then kindly asked if they could "stop now?" At this point we realised that we'll have to pay for all of this...
R390 later (Ok, so this isn't so much for 8 people but with a GCX budget - OOPS!!!!!) we walked out of our restaurant with our new friends very happy for the great place they showed us!
