No money, no phones, just the clothes on our backs and our Bibles...that is how we were sent out on our first Luke 10 mission.
Four of us hitch hiked to St Francis Bay last Friday. Not knowing where exactly to go, we walked through the streets, intentionally looking for people to bless and pray for. Not by accident we stumbled across a youth group gathering that evening. We met Rachael, an American missionary, who invited us into her home for the weekend. We wanted to bless her with prayer, fellowship and encouragement, yet we were overwhelmed by the way in which she blessed us, not just with a bed and food, but also through her testimony, loving spirit and life of obedience to God.
On a rainy Saturday morning we went to the township and had the privilege of meeting and praying for the 6 teenage girls she was working with as part of her Sonrise South Africa ministry. www.sonrisesouthafrica.com
That afternoon we spent some quality time over a plate of spaghetti with Silver, a very hospitable Mozambican Christian man and his son. God created this opportunity for telling stories, listening and stirring each other in Truth and faith. What a brother!
At a delicious chicken braai back at Rachael's farm house that evening, we had the opportunity to meet 2 local young guys who's lives were radically changed when they recently became Christians. We gathered to help them prepare a sermon they were going to preach in the township the next day.
Sunday, before heading back, we had coffee at the pastor of the local church's house. For me, the highlight of the weekend was that moment where we were all standing in a circle, holding hands, praying to our loving Father in one Spirit. There was this feeling of brotherhood in Christ and the vision of how we would one day be standing in heaven and worshipping God exactly in the same manner!
When you are deprived of everything that can give you a sense of self sufficiency and control and you have nothing to hold on to except faith that God will provide and send you to people in an unfamiliar town, who He planned in advance for you to meet... It is in this atmosphere that you really live by faith and not by sight, where healing and miracles happen, where amazing testimonies are built and God's faithfulness is proclaimed over and over.
