We are leaving Hong Kong tomorrow and heading to Malaysia. Let me fill you in on the past few days.
The ministry we are working with is at a place called Shing Mun Springs. There are a couple houses on the property where drug addicts are brought to go through withdrawl. The men who come in are called "new boys." The "new boys" spend about 10 daysin which they have to stay in their pajamas and are never left more than an arm's length away. The men assigned shifts with the "new boy" take them to the bathroom, sit with them while they sleep, share with them about Jesus, and pray with them constantly. Most of the time the "new boy" will come off drugs relatively pain free.
After the withdrawl phase the "brothers" (they are called this to encourage and develop family) stay in the house as long as they need. They do chores, worship together, play games together, hold each other accountable, and share their lives together.
When we arrived we were split into the 2 houses in which we would come to each day and develop relationships and assist in anything going on. At my house (block 4) we joined in on game night (from which I got some great ideas for rainy day activities), chores during the day, devotionals in the morning, and worship. The worship was my favorite because it was so beautiful to see chinese men able to worship and pray in freedom. You could tell these former addicts truly experienced what freedom in Christ was like.
We also got to take part in a baptism of one of the brothers, Sih Kit. His family came to see him be baptized and when his mother got there she decided to get baptized as well. When he stood to profess he wanted to follow Jesus with his life, he also asked forgiveness from his family for hurting them in the past. His father was in tears. It was incredible to see God restore that family.
Other than being part of the lives for the men, I taught the good ole "In the light drama" to some of our team here, and we performed it for both houses. They really enjoyed it and could relate. Last night Kim, Monica, Elsibe, and I had night duty. Even though we are exhausted today, we pushed through that ADD that comes with sleepiness and played several games to keep us awake.
Kim and I are about to head down to the main part of Hong Kong to meet up with everyone, do a little shopping, and watch the light show that happens every night. We are preparing ourselves for the staring because you better believe it's hard for Kim and I to blend in...we might as well be wearing pink tutus. Until Malaysia...
