Beautiful Cameroon

Dear friends and family.

After 600km behind the back the last 60 km being dirt the going really
got tough. But that did not dampen the spirits of our two taxi drivers
and their 7 seater Peugot 504 station wagons. If i am impressed with a
vehicles off road performance then it cannot be to bad. After a eventful
day we eventually arrived in Abong.

Abong a tiny village on the banks of the Benue river, not a common place
for a foreigner  to cross into Cameroon. The border is not even marked
on our map. It was through Abigail (our host from Abuja) that we heard
of Abong, she grew up in a neighboring  village.
Our last night on Nigerian soil was spent at her Uncles home and the
following morning it was time to cross the river with canoe type boats.
On the other side of the river the only form of transport was an old 109
Series 3 Land Rover pick up. Price is fixed and no competition -the
others don't make it-  and there is always space for one more. On the
Landy where the 8 of us, our guide, the two packers, mother and child,
old man, man, woman and driver. Plus approximately 400kg of animal feed.
160l of fuel -its cheaper in Nigeria- and all the passengers luggage.
Little did we know what was waiting ahead of us. 60 km of the most
challenging road that we have seen this year with a 1473m altitude
climb. It was 5 hours of holding on adventure.

Arriving in Nkambe a friendly pastor provided a place to sleep for the
night in his home and the next day out journey to Yaounde continued
arriving there the following morning at 6am.

Till Next Time
