When we first got into mainland, China, I thought “O boy, this is going to be a looong month for me.” You see just about everything here is some shade of brown or grey (and covered in dust) and that is something that can get you down if you are used to a country abundant in color.
I then decided that I don’t want to remember China as a country that is dull and dusty, so I asked God to show me the beauty in this country… And did He ever! At first I began to see the beauty in the people He created, the wonderful differences between myself and them. From the small children with their bums peeking out of their pants (they wear rather strange pants here) to the wrinkled old Chinese men with their white beards and round glasses…Absolutely beautiful.
God didn’t stop there. Then I began to notice the majestic mountains (how I looked past them in the first place is beyond me), still a dull color but o so beautiful in its wonderfully complex simplicity. The Yellow river (which is actually a rather nice shade of green by the way) seems to follow me wherever I go in China…and so does its beauty.
Last week I had the privilege to see snow falling for the first time in my 22 years…Our team went camping in the mountains and played in the snow and had so much fun in the freezing dazzle dust.
It was such a blessing when my eyes finally opened to the beauty of China.
