Taking a 16 hour bus ride to Nairobi was quite an experience. Our bus driver was so confident in his driving ability that cars on the road seemed insignificant; he would proceed to gently run others off the road if they were in the way. There was no toilet on the bus and we stopped about every 5 hours, one being a break on the side of the road with no bushes… This poses as a much easier break for men than women.
We arrived in style at our ministry point taking a taxi that lit up the night streets with its neon lights. Joy and Anja became our first official hosts and ladies of peace as they so graciously welcomed all 16 of us into their beautiful home. We attended church both Sundays in town, experiencing the high energy of a MASSIVE church, with amazing worship and dancing.
Harvest Christian School:
Our ministry work started on Monday as we headed to Harvest Christian School which at the time, 18 children ages 2-10 attended. Although we did some physical work around the school, our main purpose was to spend time with the children and the teachers. Each day we had new lessons with the kids, and we even got to speak to the teacher on certain subjects like healthy eating, proper posture and abuse. By the end of the week, the school consisted of 22 children, growing by 4 in 5 days.
Over the course of the week, Jesus revealed to us what it really means to have a servant heart. We are able to testify about the restoration of hope, as we witnessed God answering Pastor Chris’s prayers. He has been praying for people to come help out at the school, and in obedience to the Lord, the 16 of us showed up. We are so grateful to have experienced the hospitality of Pastor Chris, as each day we had a warm cup of Kenyan tea to drink while working. We also got the chance to try a popular dish called a chapatti.
Local Transportation:
A ‘matatu’ is the name of the local transportation in Kenya. This is a van that is large or small, and holds many people. No matter what, even if there is no room left, there is always room for one more person. This was one of the coolest ways to minister to the locals because you were always sitting beside someone new. The locals were always so friendly, to the point where you couldn’t walk 5 steps without someone greeting you. A few members of our team even got offers to go for dinner.
Praying for Jesus:
As a team we had the privilege to help launch a prayer room in Joy and Anja’s house. It was such a special time of fellowship with the team, sharing words of knowledge, prayers and proclamations over Kenya. Over all we felt God’s presence so strongly and His never-ending love for the people. We are praying for the restoration of faith and hope in Kenya, and an outflow of God’s love to the rest of Africa.
We are so grateful for everything we got the opportunity to do. Knowing when one journey should end and where another should begin, we must continue to our next destination…
