Take a deep breath of Kenya, and your senses highten. The people are a integrated part of this land, constantly busy day and night. The arrival in Maasailand was truly breathtaking... In isolation we where able to appreciate the full measure of the creation. Even with the wildest expectation of what the Maasai would be like, we were still amazed.
We arrived at night after induring the taxi for 160km from Narok at a village with the name of Olkoroi between the Maasai Mara and Kilimanjaro. The near death experience of getting to Maasailand was an expedition on its own. The team split up driving in two taxies and a land rover with rough terrain such as dongas, deep crevasses and bush all around us. God kept us safe that day! We set up our tents and our host André first allowed us to settle.
André, our host, briefed us that in this week we aren't here just to serve the ministry with the Maasai, but rest in the Lord and take the opportunity to appreciate Him! The team truly worked as a unit to not only finish a bush kitchen but also a tool shed with limited resources. Our budget was tight but the challenge was ahead. We worked hard from sunrise to sunset using all natural materials to build the eco bush kitchen. The Lord blessed us with more than enough funds. The foundation, beams, roof and corregated iron were put in, as well as half of the flooring that consisted of large stoned that we excivated from a mountain. All beams and colombs used where old tree trunks such as strong wild olive trees that kept the roof in place. Using material without damaging the environment is the core of the Maasai's ways as natural conservationists.
One team member confidant sums it up perfectly; "You discover something of yourself when you leave behind all the comforts of modern day society and head into the unknown with a few good friends.
This is the place where late night campfires under thr milky way defines true friendship. This is the place that you meet people that commit their whole lives to a foreign people group, and suddenly the meaning of sacrificial serving becomes clear. This is the place where you discover new animals, landscapes and shades of green and it compels to glorify the God of the universe."
This was such a privilage to see and experience. We danced and worshipped at a local church close by the village, sharing testimonies and the Word. André showed us a piece of paradise where we could swim in hot springs with fresh river passing through towering trees above us and saw wild animals passing by. Deffinately worth it after a hard days work. We also where blessed with a traditional Maasai lamb spit braai and stories of warriors, leopard hunting, close encounters, etc.
We believe that God is faithful to complete his work in Kenya and we praise him for our time here! We proclaimed the land to Jesus at in Kilifi where we where united again with our friends on Northbound and Hidden World for the final debrief before the continue the year. Testimonies was a great encouragement and we are greatful to God for Kenya!
We are excited for our next adventure, off to Egypt!
