The good Shepard

Five days, five countries… We travelled from Guatemala to Costa Rica, passing through El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. God really surprised me and it was such a joy to truly trust God and go wherever He had prepared for us. I had found myself laughing at the situations and places we were in because I really experienced the promises of God so practically. In Psalms 91 God says ‘If you say the Lord is my refuge and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent for He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.’

The Lord is so faithful and even though I still can’t comprehend the magnitude of His protection and love for us, what I experienced has drawn me closer to God and I’m more excited than ever to see His provision and miracles.

On the second day, we arrived near the border of El Salvador, we tried to hitch hike again but a police woman wouldn’t stop talking to us and I couldn’t understand what the problem was so we tried to walk another 50m but a truck of police wouldn’t let us pass, WHY? There are so many cars passing and now we just standing here. The police said we should go with them. We felt peace about it so we got onto the back and drove with them. After driving 20km they dropped us off on the road and another police car was waiting there for us, we got into their car and drove for another few kilometres, again they dropped us off and another police car took us further. This happened four times. Without us asking or even knowing what was happening, we were escorted by the police to the El Salvador boarder. THANK YOU JESUS!

The following two days, we travelled through El Salvador and Honduras. We were so happy to get a lift that was travelling through the Nicaragua border. We roadtripped with them the whole day in the back of their bakkie through the sun and rain but it didn’t matter because we were so grateful to be with them. We had no idea where we were sleeping when we got into Nicuragua but I was really trusting that our lift would invite us to stay with them. That would be impossible because we found out that they didn’t know where they were going either… Alright then… We continued to drive with them and then they decided to book into a hotel! Oh wow, we did what seemed most logical at the time… slept in their car in the parking while they were in the hotel. We blew up our mattresses and created a canopy at the back with the tent cover. Perfect. During the night we heard a loud bang of a window shattering and the car right next to us was being thrown at with rocks and the rocks were hitting our car as well. The whole time I was just hoping that none of us will move or scream or do anything because then maybe they won’t know that we were there even though our feet were sticking out the bottom of the bakkie anyway… God is so much bigger than us and there’s no need to fear man. I really learnt that God is the greatest Shepard. He protects us and cares for us individually with so much love and detail, it’s such a privilege to be part of His plans for us and His perfect love casts out ALL fear.

I thought that some of the psalms only applied to the people in the old testament; how would psalms 91 ever apply to us now? He will deliver you, under His wing you find refugee, you will not fear the terror of the night… I understand now and it’s so cool that these promises are for US as well! You can be in the most ridiculous, strange, scary situation but God is unchangeable. He is always with you.

We slept in a big fancy house in the city and then a small house in the middle of the forest. A hotel with no hot water to a hotel with boiling water and of course in the back of someone’s car. We can search for the best places to be but sometimes I feel safer and find more joy in the worst and it’s because God is with us. It is in His presence that you will find the greatest rest. In the presence of God there is pure joy and safety and hope and acceptance and lots and lots of freedom and the best part is that it’s simple. You don’t have to go to the other side of the world to experience this. God WANTS TO BE WITH YOU and He wants you to be with Him. YAY! You don’t have to hitch hike 26 times to find the perfect resting place (made that mistake already) God is right here, right now, with you.
