Peru

From Colombia we took a VERY long busride through Equador and after about 56hours we were finally in Peru. In Ferrenafe we received a much needed South African welcome from our Peru hosts, Oom Hendrik en Tannie Ronel Groenewald. Tannie Ronel greeted us with: ''Come inside, I have rusks and coffee for you.'' With the mention of rusks we were almost in tears.   In Ferrenafe we rested a few days and ate Tannie Ronel's South African meals. From Ferrenafe we went to Trujillo to present a workshop on Global Challenge. The people of Trujillo welcomed us with open arms...

Colombia

With full hearts and new expectations we left Panama for our 40 day visit in Colombia. Our time in Colombia can be split into 4 parts- the parent visit, 7 day backpacking challenge, Santa Marta ministry point and Fusagasuga ministry point.   What an immense privilege it was to have some of our parents visiting us on the journey in Colombia. We met them in Bogota and had a celebration dinner where everyone received some gifts all the way from South Africa. Biltong, sweets, cookies and some new coffee plungers. We spent a day exploring the city of Bogota. From...

Amor Cuba

Amor Cuba
Even though we have left Santiago, Cuba over a month ago, and new memories and visitors have filled our days, I think our whole team keenly look at pictures of Cuba and just smile. The kind of grin you give when you find a childhood picture of yourself or when you see an old couple share an ice cream. I think this update is so overdue, due to the fact that describing our experience in Cuba is as wonderful, complex and diverse as the country itself. For starters, Cuba is a communistic country, but as our Cuban friends explained to...

Zapote( Cuba)

Zapote( Cuba)
Zapote is the name used for a delicious fruit in the area where Santiago is found in Cuba. The outside looks like a kiwi fruit without the fuzz, the inside is pinkish orange, has a big black pip and the flesh is almost like that of an avocado. The taste is reminiscent of a combination of mango, grapefruit, papaya and avocado but not quite. It has elements I can sort of reference but unlike anything I've ever had before and that for me was Cuba. The streets, vibrant with life, people everywhere, horse carriages, scooters, public transportation trucks, vintage cars,...

Training!

After a whirlwind 7 weeks of training, that felt somehow longer than that considering all encompassed in them. I had laughed, cried, been excited, angry, confused, exhausted refreshed, very uncomfortable and so much more. But you see, I'd chosen this ( at least I think so) and when I came to Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa I knew training would be challenging but quite necessary. Well, I didn't foresee my irritation at having to do some athletic exercises on Survivor, being challenged on how I prefer to put God in a box I can wrap my head around when in actual...
