Don't stress kid

Hallelujah! A 5 day lay over in India! Perfect for a little break, a lot of sleep and of course, exploring. So what's our budget? R1500 for 9 people. Not each. All together, inclusive of food, accommodation and travel. No sweat. Actually, a lot of sweat, this is India, the heat and humidity is next level!  Off we go, out the airport, 20kg on our backs, 5kgs on our fronts, ready to walk a short 2.5km to our hostel in the blistering heat. As we turn a corner, a taxi offers us a ride and calls his mate to assist....

Remembering Rwanda

IMG-20190419-WA0007
This is a country where kites soar above your head while people peacefully go about their daily tasks. It wasn't always like this. Rwanda has a dark history which is so dark that one would not think that this is the same country as 25 years ago.    In 1994 for a period of 100 days the streets of Kigali, the capital, were drenched in blood. A million people lost their lives. The smell of dead bodies flooded the air while dogs feasted on human flesh. Neighbours turned against each other and even family. Fear, rape, abuse and hate dominated...

We have our heading

Every good blog needs at least one or more movie quotes and references. When Captain Jack Sparrow was asked the question how he was able to escape a desert island, after being marooned their by his mutinous crew, with only one pistol and one shot, he simply responded with:"you forgot one very important thing mate, I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."   During our Luke 10, the part in the Bible where seventy people where send out by Jesus to preach the Gospel but they are not allowed to take anything with them, our leaders "marooned" us us in Swaziland and told...

Tangible Love

DSC06805
You know the song, "break my heart for what breaks yours"? There are times when I regret singing it, because God wants us to know His heart, and He will definitely fulfill this request. And that's exactly what He did over this time in Africa. When this happens, you have two decisions. You could feel guilty for everything you have and make it about you. Or, you take the opportunity to learn God's heart in this situation and step up to make a difference. Even if it's in one person's life. You get to love this person with a God...

Tea again!

Screenshot_2019-04-12-10-59-12-1
I'm in a different country with different habits surrounded by different cultures and beliefs as well as a language I don't understand. The one thing our people do have in common though is Tea. The people here love tea. I'm more of a coffee person myself. For them tea is a social event that has to take place numerous times a day. I've had so much tea now that if I were to be a cup, I'd be bottomless. Once I put my cup down, they take it as a signal that they should pour more tea into the cup....

Step by step

In the Global community, a "Luke 10" is a concept that is spoken of with much excitement, because everyone who has participated in such a challenge, has seen how God provides and how there is a multiplication of miracles when you have only Him to trust in.    "After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them: The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his...

The beauty of mystery

IMG_20190411_033737
Africa! What a beautiful place Rwanda and Uganda was🇷🇼🇺🇬 I was mesmerized by the kind hearts of these people. We thought that we were going to serve and love. Instead we have been served and loved so much more. And what makes this even more special is that these people really don't have much. But what they do have they give away or served us with that.   Holding an african child on my lap, waving at schoolkids screaming Muzungo, hugging baby goats and just loving the friendly hearts welcoming you around every corner! I was thinking back on childhood....

Recurring thoughts

People think to be an evangelist you have to be a certain spiritual level with God, have you to be fasting and praying, asking God earnestly to bring someone across our path just so we can turn them to Jesus. Although our hearts should be longing for such things as these, this shouldn’t be our motives of wanting to evangelise. Let’s first start off with what “evangelism” means. It doesn’t mean you walk up to random people and try convert their beliefs to yours. Even if we tried it is not us who can convert anyone anyway, but God who...

Expectations

At first I wasn’t really excited to go to Vietnam. All I know about Vietnam is probably what you know as well. A good 49 years ago there was a war waging in this beautiful country.     But it turned out to be so much more! Seeing Vietnam as a place where there was only a war is the same as saying South Africa as a place where people live in huts and where lions walk around in our streets.     We mostly just built relationships with the people. We taught English, had English conversation sessions with the...

Acceptance

81D36EF1-5891-45AD-80D0-6EA9A1EDFEC0
Okay, so the title might be a bit misleading, but it’s still about acceptance.     I am someone that has a lot of questions, analyzes and overthinks things. So of course I will have a lot of questions about what I believe, about God, why some things happen   and why some things don’t.   One thing is physically healing. Why doesn’t everyone get healed and why does it sometimes feel so complicated to pray for someone to get healed?     The first day of teaching in Johannesburg God answered both questions. The second one He showed me...
